Information about Majorca :
The capital of Majorca is Palma which is also the largest municipality on Majorca. The official languages are Catalan and Spanish. In 2007 the population of Majorca was 813,729. The Islands of Cabrera and Sa Dragonera also belong to Majorca which gives Majorca a total area of 3620.42km². The highest elevation on Majorca is Puig Major at 1445mtrs. Majorca is divided into six territories. The first to be mentioned is Sierra de Tramuntana , an up to 15km wide mountain range with 10 peaks over 1000 meters high, which runs parallel to the northwest coast. The mountains extend over a length of 90 kms reaching from the Island of Sa. Dragonera in the southwest to Cap Formentor in the north. The highest point approximately in the middle of the mountain range is Puig Major at 1445mtrs. Bordering the Sierra de Tramuntana on the South east slope of the mountain range between the peninsula of La Victoria and the urban regions of the capital Majorca is the region of Es Raiguer . This is a transitional zone from the mountains to the planes of Es Pla, in the centre of Majorca. There is an abundance of water to be found here, although very little flat cultivatable terrain. The region of Pla de Mallorca or Es Pla is located in the central region of Majorca, and is only interrupted by smaller peaks of which the Mensa Puig de Randa is the highest at 542mtrs and it borders the region of Migjorn. Llevant marks the eastern and north eastern territories of Majorca. The mountain range of Serres de Llevant, which is much lower than the Sierra de Tramuntana in the west, runs through Llevant. Migjorn is basically the southern continuation of the plane of Pla de Mallorca. Despite the rather flat character of the region, the most southerly region of Majorca has a peak of over 500mtrs above sea level, which is the 509mtr high Puig Sant Salvador . This mountain is the highest peak in the southern area of the Sierra de Levant. In the southwest of Majorca is the great Bay of Majorca, upon which the old capital of the former Majorcan Kingdom and he present political and economical centre of the autonomous region of the Balearic lies. Palma is a Roman creation dating back to the time of the Roman occupation of the Island in the year 123BC. Today Palma has 383,107 inhabitants which is almost half (47.4% ) of the population of Majorca. Because the region of Palma only comprises of the township, respectively, the municipality it has the smallest area of the Island, but has the highest number of inhabitants. The borders to Palma are, in the West the region of Sierra de Tramuntana , in the north Raiguer, to the northeast Pla de Mallorca and in the southeast Migjorn.
